About

Kim Rempel is a visual artist living in Grimsby, Ontario. She began her career working as a plein air painter. In 2009 Rempel joined the ranks of daily painters (the practice of creating a small works daily and posting them to a blog). She continued this practice until 2013 when she moved into abstract painting.

Rempel describes her process: I begin each piece with loose, intuitive mark-making. At this stage I am painting solely with movement and energy in mind. I rotate the canvas, pick up another colour, and make more marks. Next I begin the journey of editing: painting marks out, adding new ones. Searching for rhythm, shape and colour pairings. Although many things go into creating a successful painting, colour relationships are what fuel my work. What does this stroke look like against that stroke? What happens to the mood of a piece when I paint this colour beside that colour? These questions excite me and propel me to keep investigating and creating. We view a lot of images every day but then one day, you walk by a painting and you stop. Something about it stirs you. It could be a feeling the colours are giving you or something in the subject that brings back a private memory. It’s personal. And it takes you to another place.

Rempel is represented by Petroff Gallery in Toronto, Westland Gallery (London) and Art Gallery of Burlington.
